ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Sichuan is a land of mountains and rivers. In its mountains lives an energy you cannot see: the mist that drifts through them. In Chinese, we call it shanlan. This mist is what I paint, and it speaks closely to the idea of disappearing.

For this Nervape 3x, I used the style of my oil painting series Mountain Mists. Flowing mist and open, empty space cover its whole body. I let go of painting any real landscape and used only texture and brushstrokes to show disappearing: things slowly fading into their surroundings. The traces stay, while the form fades. Together, they create the mood of Eastern painting, what we call yijing.
