Zoie Lam

Zoie Lam, known as Zlism, is an active artist in Hong Kong’s art scene. Since 2010, she has been creating the “ZLISM” series, building an imaginative planet inhabited by kind-hearted and uniquely shaped characters, telling stories through vibrant and bold colours.

She excels at combining intense fluorescent tones of pink, orange and yellow to compose her images, weaving her inner world, elements of nature and social observations into the canvas. Every stroke is full of vitality, with characters like “Tui Tui” guiding viewers to explore positive energy and self-healing.

As a Hong Kong artist, she uses colour as her language, turning paintings into portals to another joyful planet that conveys hope and dreams.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work takes several of Hong Kong’s iconic landmarks as its subject, rendered in Zlism’s signature vivid and imaginative painting style. In the composition, the city’s outlines, architecture and everyday scenery are reinterpreted—preserving local characteristics while infusing them with the artist’s distinctive fantastical colours and character-driven atmosphere.

The head section of the piece is particularly distinctive. The artist first builds up rich layers of colour one after another, allowing the hues to accumulate and interweave on the surface, creating a dense and complex depth. She then peels these colours away layer by layer. This process of repeated accumulation and removal is not merely a technical experiment, but an externalisation of inner feelings—through the building up and stripping away of colour, she delicately expresses her profound, complex and genuine emotions toward Hong Kong. Each layer’s appearance and disappearance resembles the sedimentation and release of memory and emotion, allowing viewers to sense the intimate yet deep connection between the artist and this city.
