It Starts With a Hand

Every story starts with a hand, reaching for something new.

Look at yours. It picks things up and lets them fall. It writes words and crosses them out. You use it thousands of times a day, and almost never look at it.

This story starts with a hand. Not mine, at first.

An Ape's Hand

I have always loved animals. Apes most of all, because of their hands. So big, they seem made for reaching.

A gibbon lives in the trees. To move, it has to let go of one branch and trust grasping the next one. Sometimes it misses. Then it tries again.

An orangutan makes a new bed up in the trees every night. In the morning, it leaves and makes a new one somewhere else.

A chimpanzee picks up a stick and uses it as a tool.

And there is one movie scene I never forgot. In 2001: A Space Odyssey, an ape throws a bone into the sky, and the bone becomes a spaceship. One hand, one tool, all the way to the stars.

Letting go. Building. Wondering. Maybe these are the best things a hand can do.

So I gave Nervape hands too big for its body, and arms that are too long. Not a mistake. A reminder to keep reaching.

A Human Hand

For years I was a designer in crypto, drawing for screens. I made NFTs, and I liked that open, strange world. Crypto gave me a language I still speak. But it was never my whole world. The screens were bright, but the trees were quiet. I was always happiest when I closed my laptop and walked outside somewhere new.

Nervape was born there, between the screen and the trees. First as a drawing with no weight.

Bradley, gave it weight. In a garage in Savannah, deep in the American South where moss hangs from the old oaks, a 3D printer worked through the night. The first ape came out bent. It cracked. He printed it again, and again, until one could stand.

The first time I held it, it was not a drawing anymore. It felt alive. Like it was ready to go out and see the world.

We did not know who it should be. So we left the face empty. An empty face is not missing something. It is waiting for someone.

Many Hands

Then we took it apart. The arms and legs became parts you can change. One day, a new arm clicked into place, and the ape became something else.

We sent the same ape to different cities, into different hands. Artists, designers, and people who were just curious. It left as one idea. It came back as many.

We do not know what it will become. We just hope it never stops changing.

Your Hands

Your hands can do more than you think. You just have to start.

They do not need to be hands of an artist. Just ones that are willing to reach, to miss, and to try again.

When something makes you curious, reach for it.

APE IN.
